Ishraque supporters lock Nagar Bhaban gate

Supporters of BNP leader Ishraque Hossain have locked the main gate and all departmental offices, bringing all service activities to a halt.

They have been staging a continuous sit-in at the front of Nagar Bhaban, demanding that Ishraque be handed over the mayoral responsibilities. A large section of Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) employees have also joined the movement.

The demonstrators are chanting slogans such as: “We demand an oath, we demand Ishraque’s oath”, “No more delays with the mayor, we won’t tolerate this”, “The struggle continues, Ishraque will fight”, and “Father of the city, Ishraque —we have not forgotten you”. Their chants have echoed through the entire Nagar Bhaban.

On Tuesday, supporters of Ishraque and members of the DSCC labour union took position from the morning on the staircase inside the main gate of the corporation’s Gulistan headquarters, continuing their protest. Service activities at Nagar Bhaban remain suspended, with service seekers being turned away.

Ishraque Hossain is expected to arrive at Nagar Bhaban around 3pm to check in on the protesters.
